The same but different. Climbing Episode 2, followed the predictable route of every other sequel that ever was : Retaining the general basis and format of the original, it was still tweaked with something different. Same location, same plot, new cast – think Hollywood remakes : Batman, Superman, X-men, etc…
Once again we hit the same crag, but a slightly different outcrop of rocks. The weather was dry and sunny and it was a pleasure to have the excuse to hang around outside for the afternoon. It was a bit breezier, but nothing beyond the capability of man, or Explorer scouts.
I was still tired from the mornings extertions, while Josh had brought his large foam bouldering mat this time – it was not specifically designed for the aptly named Windgather Rocks – one that included a lead weight to help it stop being blown away would have been more appropriate.
Oldest Explorer Banksy and his mate Lawrie were playing out for the afternoon and having all met at the rock, we were soon playing on the cliffs. Bottom roping and a bit of instruction first to get used to it all : the Figures of eight, Buddy checks, and mini abseiling followed by a chance to climb and belay each other. Banksy excited and enjoying the exposure and drama of climbing, Lawrie hesitantly so, but not being outshone. The banter continued along with the unwavering trust – both happy to load the ropes and hand their safety to their friend below.
Gradually the challenge progressed and they picked their way up a few “Difficults” and even a “Severe”. Having to do it in trainers, they made a very good fist of the climbs, although the hardcore traditionalists may argue over some of the routes taken.
Time wore on but there was still enough left for 2 abseils. The first a straightforward get the hang of it – literally, and once the frighteners were over we finished on an overhanging monster complete with tricky start and freehanging finish! Josh made it look straightforward but the knife edge outcrop was easier to lower yourself over the top metre and then put your faith in the rope.
Crag ascended and descended several times, a spot of bouldering, and thankfully an early finish. Mischief managed. Banksy and Lawrie toddled off while Robin and I stowed the gear in the back of the Batmobile and prepared for Batman 3 – whenever that may be.
An uneventful yet brilliantly competent climbing display.
