A Short History

When Lord Baden-Powell thought of Scouting, he dreamt of boys being trained and nurtured to help them overcome enthralling challenges.  When Marple scouts were set up in 1908, they took on these values.  Soon, there were two groups, or "troops", of Scouts, Cobden and Kinder, vying for the chance to turn on the street-lights, to help old ladies avoid horse-drawn carriages, and to lead the St Georges day parade.  They argued for years over which group should do what.  Then, after the failure of a series of arranged marriages which were meant to close the divide, they devised a way to give one troop supremacy for a year.

And so the "Battle of Marple" was born.  An annual contest to challenge their Scouting abilities, their mental agility, and their physical prowess.  A two day event of two breathtaking wide games, one day's intensive training, and 12 head-to-head tests, before culminating in a final "Gruellinator" assault course.  The power swapped hands over the years, until, in 1964, two young Kinder boys tricked Cobden into agreeing to a "Singing and dancing" contest instead.

The Gang Show has since gone from strength to strength, but the battle of Marple cup was mysteriously lost around November 1978, and Cobden never had the chance to win the trophy back.  Until now.
